Paypal $5000 limit, and the problems it causes you

Guess I'm smarter than everyone who works at Paypal. So are you. So is your cat.

Here's why:

• I have a Paypal account, and have spend $5,000 over the life of the account.
• Paypal will not allow me to spend another penny - seriously.
  • You heard that right. I can't spend another penny without taking one of the drastic actions below
• My choices now, according to Paypal, are:
  1. "Link" the account to a bank account
     • This increases the risk that I could lose all of the money in the bank account if there is a security problem with Paypal, Microsoft IE, or something else in the internet.
     • Paypal has had plenty of documented security problems, as you can find through Google, but examples exist at

  2. Open one of their personal Paypal credit cards.
  • This is something I call the "Mafia Marketing" strategy, a sleazy approach that's been passed on from scumbag to scumbag for generations
    • very popular in the movie "Good Fellas"
    • of course, no one at Paypal is as cool as the actors in "Good Fellas"
  3. Close the account and re-open a new one
  • What? Yep, that's one of the ideas the nice lady on the phone told me.
• They didn't mention better choices, like
  • find one of the alternatives/competitors to Paypal at
    • http://venturebeatprofiles.com/company/profile/paypal/competitors
  • write a blog entry and tell 55,000 Twitter followers about it

I had already wasted about 30 minutes trying to figure out how to spend more money through them (and there was no way) and I spent 30 minutes on the phone with a really nice lady who was smart enough to agree that "this may not be the best policy".

At least if you read this, you may not have to waste hours of your time.

Paypal is sometimes downright evil

Read the info in Wikipedia, at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/PayPal and look at the section under "Criticism and limitations", where Paypal made it so tough for someone raising money for Hurricane Katrina that he had to stop.

Makes me hate them even more.
